Report on the 94th AGM, Dinner and Wreath Laying Ceremony  (photos below)

On Friday 8th November the Old Loughtonians’ Association held there 94th Annual General Meeting and reunion dinner at the Old Loughtonians Hockey Club venue in Luxborough Lane Chigwell.

The AGM recorded that they were sorry that Andrew Kaye was unable to attend and take the chair due to health reasons. Everyone wished him well and hoped to see him in the near future.

Roger Timms had already advised us that he was going to step down as Treasurer after many years of loyal service, but would wish to remain on the committee. Roger was already Honorary President of the Association in appreciation of his hard work over the years. Humphrey Wheeler (1951) already the Assistant Treasurer agreed to take over the responsibility of Treasurer.

Apart from that, the AGM took it’s usual path but the Secretary was pleased to confirm that we have gained two additional committee members this year. David McAdams (1955) and Christopher Tomkins (1966) offered their assistance and were welcomed to the committee.

The dinner took place around 8:00 pm and 65 people attended this year, unfortunately due to health & long distance travelling three members cried off at the last minute, Tony Mullins, Michael Nicholson & John McAdams.

We all enjoyed a very nice 3 course meal followed by cheese & biscuits with tea or coffee. The committee had agreed to maintain the cost of the dinner to £35 per head, which has been held for the last 5/6 years, and also to put more wine on the table and although most members drive to the event, the unused bottles were left on the bar for members to take home.

The Secretary informed members that he had spoken to Meredith Houston in recent weeks and that he and Eleanor would have to decline the Associations kind offer to attend the dinner as they were virtually now housebound. The Secretary also announced that they would both be 90 years of age in March 2020.

The evening went very quickly and from comments on the night and by emails later the following week everyone appeared to have enjoyed themselves. Next year’s 95th AGM/Dinner will be on Friday 6th November 2020.

On Sunday 10th November the President and several members marched down Church Hill to the Loughton War Memorial for the formal laying of wreaths. Pastor Roland Brown (1955) of Forest Hill Church read the first lesson which was from John 15: chapters 9-17.

Various dignitaries laid wreaths lead by the Member of Parliament, Mrs Eleanor Laing as well as our President Michael Lane. After the service of remembrance we walked back to the Royal British Legion in Church Hill and enjoyed a buffet lunch and liquid refreshment.
